About The Port Of Grein
Grein sits along a gentle bend of the Danube in Upper Austria, its pastel façades and steep-roofed houses clustered beneath the wooded hills that mark the approach to the Wachau Valley. The town's centerpiece, Greinburg Castle, rises above the river with turrets and courtyards that reflect centuries of noble residence, now open to visitors who explore its halls and river-facing terraces. Grein's small scale and quiet streets make it a refreshing counterpoint to larger Danube ports.
The historic core, with its arcaded town hall and modest theater among the oldest in Austria, lies within easy walking distance of the riverbank, making a stroll through town an easy addition to a castle visit. Grein also serves as a convenient gateway for taking in the Wachau Valley's terraced vineyards and river scenery, a stretch of the Danube recognized for its natural and cultural landscape.
