About The Port Of Plymouth
Plymouth sits on England's southwest coast, where the natural harbor of Plymouth Sound has long made it a launching point for historic voyages, most famously the Mayflower's 1620 departure for the New World. The Hoe, a grassy waterfront promenade overlooking the Sound, offers sweeping views and marks the spot where, legend holds, Sir Francis Drake finished his game of bowls before facing the Spanish Armada.
The adjoining Barbican district, with its cobbled lanes and preserved Elizabethan houses, sits within easy walking distance of the harbor and forms the heart of the old town. Visitors can trace centuries of naval history at nearby forts and museums, browse independent shops and seafood restaurants along the quay, or simply take in the working port atmosphere that still defines this enduring English harbor city.
