Wesel is a port of call on Rhine river cruise itineraries running nearly year-round from March through November, with Viking River Cruises calling here.
Set at the confluence of the Rhine and Lippe rivers, Wesel is a modest German town with a long history as a fortified river crossing. Largely destroyed during the Second World War, it was carefully rebuilt, and its restored old town center now reflects that determined recovery. The Willibrordi Cathedral, with roots reaching back centuries, anchors the town's core and stands as a symbol of continuity through hardship.
Visitors find a walkable center within easy reach of the riverbank, its market square and brick facades offering a calm counterpoint to the more heavily touristed Rhine cities nearby. Wesel also serves as a practical gateway for exploring the surrounding Lower Rhine countryside, with its flat farmland, cycling paths, and small villages. The town rewards those who appreciate quieter corners of the river's history.
